My usual annual collection had been slow in production during 2006, and the main summer comic convention was fast approaching. I originally started CCCC! as filler material to boost the page count, but I quickly realised that I still wouldn't be able to produce enough good material to balance it out.
I set aside my annual collection and worked on getting CCCC! out instead, as a one-shot ashcan. Partly auto-biographical, partly wish-fulfilment, mostly improvised and drawn freehand with scant regard for perspective, continuity, or indeed, backgrounds of any kind. The art was cleaned up, lettered and toned all on the computer. It was an interesting experiment - the freeform nature allowed me to try out different page layouts and more unusual panel compositions than I usually do.
